How We Live

Åsane Folk High School has seven dormitory buildings. Each building consists of eight to twelve double rooms. Usually, two rooms share a bathroom and toilet. We have only a limited number of single rooms. If you want a single room, you must pay extra for this. In the dormitories you’ll find a washing machine/dryer, a small kitchen with cooking facilities and refrigerator, and a cozy common room in each dormitory. Students are responsible for keeping both their own rooms and common areas clean

Dormitory and facilities

All main meals are prepared in the school’s large kitchen by skilled chefs and eaten together in the school’s cozy dining hall.

The school also has a large student/teaching kitchen where you and your fellow students can meet and cook food for fun occasions, whether it’s for the dormitory, for your program, or maybe just you and some good friends who want to have a nice time with some homemade food.

In the school’s surrounding areas, there are many beautiful hiking trails whether you want to go to the mountains or use the small roads and trails in the school’s immediate vicinity.

The school has a sports hall, gymnasium, and fitness room available to students. Throughout the school year we have elective courses that offer you training and outdoor experiences.

Åsane’s highest mountain, Hylkjeveten (486 meters above sea level), is located in the school’s immediate vicinity and is a popular summit hike for many of the school’s students. Every year we have competitions about which students and which classes have the most trips to the top during the school year.

If you want, you also get the opportunity to test your fitness and endurance in the uphill race “Stoltzen opp” (Stoltzekleiven up). A hiking trail that starts in Sandviken and goes steeply upward to the top of Sandviksfjellet, which is one of the 7 mountains that surround Bergen.

The school's kitchen

In the kitchen we are 3 chefs who all serve you good, varied, and nutritious food. We make almost everything from scratch and are proud to say that we make all food from scratch in addition to baking bread, buns, and cakes ourselves.

As much as possible, we make seasonal food and preferably with local ingredients. The menu ranges from traditional dishes to more modern dishes and fast food, often with input from students.

The chefs aim for the meal to be experienced as the highlight of the day. We naturally accommodate allergies and other various considerations.
