Common Subjects
During the week we gather for common subjects. Here we focus on development within different areas of competence and cultural unity.
Common Focus
One hour each week we gather for Common Focus. Here we focus on different competence areas: Creative, collaboration, global and life skills. We focus on creativity, lifting our gaze together and expanding our horizons.
The program varies from week to week, and includes everything from lectures and workshops to visits from different organizations. We want to create new engagement and cultivate the competence that students already have.
Throughout the year we also open for “Academic Free Rein”, where students can share their own interests and engagement. Together we challenge and create knowledge, values and attitudes that are relevant both for life at school – and life after.
Bubble Burst
Half an hour each week all students at the school gather for Bubble Burst. Here we discuss issues from the international news and public debate – from the world outside our bubble.
Saturday Seminar
Most Saturdays during the school year we have Saturday seminars in the morning. At some of these seminars we have outside guests. These can be people from various non-profit organizations, or authors, visual artists and musicians. Other Saturday seminars are the responsibility of the different programs – here students get the opportunity to present things they care about to their fellow students. On Saturday evenings we gather for student evenings or other events.
Sing-along
Community is important to us, and therefore the sing-along has a central place in school life. It’s important that it should be fun and students get to help influence the repertoire. It can be pop, folk songs and musical songs. At the same time we want it to sound good, and we often sing both 3-part and 4-part harmony. During the school year we perform in connection with several of the school’s major events. In December we arrange an atmospheric Christmas concert.
Culture Hour and Cultural Outings
Bergen has numerous permanent ensembles that perform on the city’s many stages: The National Theatre, Ole Bull Scene, Logen, USF Verftet where Bergen Jazz Forum and West Norwegian Jazz Center are located, Ricks theatre, various clubs and small venues like Hulen, Garage, Kvarteret etc. Grieghallen is the city’s main venue which in addition to housing the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra, also offers a wide selection of concerts and performances throughout the year. Here you’ll find opera, shows and concerts with various celebrities within many different genres. Norway’s only professional dance ensemble outside Oslo, Nye Carte Blanche is also based in Bergen. Bergen cinema has 18 digital cinema halls, and each autumn BIFF is arranged which is a separate film festival for documentary films.
Åsane Folk High School actively uses Bergen’s cultural offerings through the school’s unique cultural program: “culture hour”. Here we make use of the city’s cultural offerings and put together a package that aims to familiarize you with parts of the theatre, concert and art offerings available in Bergen. During class time we prepare for and discuss the performances and concerts we’re going to see and have seen. We can promise you good experiences if you bring an open mind. Tickets and transport to all performances are paid through the school fees.
