Electives

We offer a wide selection of different elective subjects that students can choose from.

In addition to main subjects and core subjects, students will be able to choose electives during four elective periods where two different subjects are chosen per period.

Life drawing

Learn basic technique with an introduction to still life before we move on to life drawing with live models.

Ball games

Football, handball, volleyball, floorball, basketball, or American football. We have the school gym available or play outdoors if weather permits.

Pencil and brush

You can develop your drawing skills in pencil, ink, and charcoal drawing. You’ll work with still life studies, portrait drawing and create your own compositions. Color use and composition.

Boat license

Course that gives you the foundation to take the exam for your own boat license. A boat license is mandatory for anyone who wants to operate a recreational boat 8 meters or larger with 25 or more horsepower on the engine.

Debate club

Learn the art of debating, taking a position, building arguments and defending your viewpoints against factual and unfactual attacks.

DnD DIY

For you who love Dungeons & dragons! Here you’ll get the opportunity to make your own battlemaps, DM screen, dice bags, and even design, 3D-print and paint your own figures. Maybe even make your own dice?

Explore Nepal

14-day trip to Nepal. Trekking in the Himalayas’ fantastic mountain areas, encounters with foreign people and cultures, and visits to roadless mountain villages at over 3,500 meters altitude. See also joint study trip.

Philosophy

In philosophy elective we explore long lines and great names in the history of thought, from the classics of antiquity to modern existential philosophy. We also have time for some short lines and small names, and let students’ questions and interests guide the content.

Film club

The elective for you who love film. Here we watch different films and discuss and debate them afterwards.

Fishing

Join us on fishing trips! We fish from both boat and from land. You’ll receive training in basic fishing skills with different equipment and various techniques. In addition, we set fishing nets and crab traps.

Frisbee golf

The challenges are to control the frisbee’s flight curve against the course’s obstacles and difficulties. The course’s difficulty level consists partly of the hole’s length and obstacles in the form of trees, water, bushes and other things

Guitar course

Guitar is one of the most versatile instruments we have. Easy to carry, incredibly mood-setting in social settings. We start with basic skills in chords and playing techniques before Christmas, and gradually become more advanced throughout the winter. Prior knowledge is not necessary, but you should have your own guitar.

Herbarium

Herbarium: In this elective you get to study different plant species. Join us in collecting, drying and pressing plants.

Student cooking

Do you want good tips about simple and cheap meals that can be made in a studio kitchen? Then this elective is for you! We make weekly menus, shop and cook good and affordable food together.

Improv

Course in basic theater sports/improvisation. The subject consists of various scenic improvisation games and is suitable for everyone who wants to work on their stage fright, all playful people, everyone who has something they want to say and who needs a stage to say it.

Kayak

Basic course in sea kayaking. You are introduced to the kayak and equipment. After completing the course, through simple practical exercise, you have learned to use kayak, paddle, spray skirt and vest. In addition, you are familiar with simple safety routines and exercises, as well as how to effectively maneuver the kayak. The course provides a wet card, which is often requested at places that rent out kayaks and canoes.

Ceramics

In Ceramics elective you work with both functional forms and sculpture. You don’t need experience with clay work, you will get an introduction to various techniques and relevant tools, in addition to different forms of surface treatment and decoration

Climbing

Here you learn to climb and belay. You will also get the opportunity to get a top rope card, so you can climb in all indoor climbing facilities in Norway. We often use Lehmkulhallen or other climbing facilities.

Playing card making

In this elective you get the opportunity to make your very own unique deck of cards! You will be trained in linocut, which will be used to make the back of the deck, while on the front of the deck you have complete freedom to do whatever you want! You can, for example, make yourself the king! In addition to drawing materials, you will have access to various stamps and collage cutouts.

Creative writing

Love to write? In creative writing you get the opportunity to develop your writing through various exercises and feedback on texts.

Creative workshop

Here you get to shape useful objects in several different materials and get an introduction to various techniques and relevant tools. Materials we use can be clay, wool and tiles for mosaics

Songwriting

Create your own song, write lyrics and melody, set chords to it, and get time in a sound studio with your own sound engineer who helps you find YOUR twist.

Painting

You gain knowledge about color use and composition in painting, and can try out varied techniques in painting within abstract and naturalistic expressions.

Mindfulness

Here we will explore techniques for relaxation and increased joy of life. We will among other things try Tai chi, laughter yoga, tapping, self-hypnosis, meditation, breathing techniques, massage, therapeutic coloring, self-development and aromatherapy.

Miniature painting

In this elective you get training in how to prep, paint and finish miniatures.

Musical script

The whole school puts on a self-written musical in the spring. In the script group we work on creating characters and making a story built on the students’ ideas. We learn how to write scripts, translate songs from musicals and adapt them to our new story. The result of this elective will be seeing what we have written come to life on stage in a full-scale musical. One of the year’s highlights.

Mountain hikes

Bergen is known for beautiful mountains. In addition to our local “Veten”, we have Fløyfjellet, Ulriken, Lyderhorn, Sandviksfjellet, Løvstakken and more! Join us and enjoy the beautiful nature. In Bergen there is no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothes. Remember rain gear!!

Revue

Join us in making a revue from blank sheets to premiere. We write sketches, revue songs and create big show numbers. Only imagination stops us. Here we learn basic stage training and find safety and joy together in standing on a stage.

Circuit training

Jump, run, lift, do some burpees and sweat together with friends.

Stoltzen up

Love lactic acid and pain in thighs and lungs? Join us training in Stolzekleiven in Bergen. About 300 meters elevation via over 950 steps of varying height. Record men: 7:54 and women: 9:34. School record: About 9:30. Assistant principal: about 30 min!

Knitting

Knitting is more popular than ever! Here you learn to knit from scratch, or you can further develop your skills. You can learn to knit with beads, pattern knitting, felting and similar. Or maybe you want to start with a simple scarf or learn how to knit socks? You know best which challenge suits you.

Swimming

We swim at AdO Arena in the center of our city, a professional swimming and diving facility, where you can dive, train swimming, or just bathe and enjoy life. This subject has a course fee of 500 kroner.

Sing!

Do you want to participate in weekly masterclasses where you can learn more about the voice and voice use? Here you can explore singing and vocal technique in a group and sing together with friends. If you want to have more one-on-one vocal training, you can try individual singing lessons.

Theater

In this elective you get an introduction to various acting techniques and we work with different productions, both large and small. We entertain at school, or have our own productions. We have among other things put on “The Spanish Fly”. Here you need no experience, only determination and desire to challenge yourself.

Teddy bear workshop

A friend for life or a craft to fall in love with? You learn to make old-fashioned teddy bears. Some discover a new hobby here, others let it stay with the one teddy bear and get a memory from the year at school. You get training in the necessary techniques. Creative joy and creativity are in focus.

Drawing

You get an introduction to basic techniques in freehand drawing with pencil, charcoal, and ink. The course provides introduction to drawing exercises in portrait drawing and still life, as well as work with your own compositions.

Ukulele

Learn to play “mini guitar”! Ukulele is easy to learn, easy to play and easy to carry!

Vegetarian / Vegan cooking

Here you can learn something new about healthy diet, have fun in the kitchen and get some new inspiration. The menu is decided by the student group.

We renovate

Want to learn more about renovation? You get to join in renovating a room from start to finish. You get good tips about taping, priming, plastering and painting. Join us and put your mark on Åsane Folk High School!

Yoga

In this elective you will gain an understanding of what Yoga is and how to practice it. Here we focus on various elements in Yoga such as meditation, breathing technique and physical exercises. There are many different forms of yoga and you will here get the opportunity to try a bit of different ones.

Yearbook

Do you have an editor inside you? In this elective you get the opportunity to help design this year’s yearbook. At the end of the school year, all students get their own yearbook, which you have helped create!

Zumba

Originally zumba is the dance class with hot rhythms and swaying hips, but we at Åsane take it a step further; with music from around the world we get a really good workout together!
